The Cottage seeks to define a more modern aesthetic for a traditional cottage form. The existing building on the site has been demolished and the new building sits on the existing footprint. Located in the Cheshire green belt, the house occupies a large site which contains well maintained gardens and green space.
The project includes an ancillary building containing a swimming pool, gym and photographic studio. The pool house is located away from the house to ensure clear views into the garden and the uninterrupted countryside beyond. The arrangement of house and pool create an informal garden enclosure which forms a transitional paved terrace area leading into the less formal landscaping. Extensive glazing at ground floor level allows flexible interaction between house, pool and garden.
A more free flowing timber form houses a gym which is clad in timber to link the building into its context.
The main focus of the house is its roof. A simple structure of timber and steel allows the roof to float over the forms of the house. The spaces in the house are planned to maximise the garden, with the elevation to public courtyard more solid in its elevation and forms.
